Greece is renowned for the ancient Greek religion where they worship numerous Gods. Many of us might have heard about ‘ZEUS’ – The King of all Greek Gods. Greeks mainly worship their principal God – ‘Dodekatheon’ and the Twelve Olympians namely – Ares, Poseidon, Athena, Demeter, Dionysus, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, and Hermes. Greeks have also known for their mystical beliefs like magical creatures of which Medusa the witch is very famous.

The Parthenon – a very important temple is located on the Athenian Acropolis in Greece. To clarify, the temple is dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena. Parthenon is said to be constructed during 447 – 432 BC by the Emperor of Athens and subsequently is the most important surviving building of the ancient Greek era. Most importantly, the building was not only used as a place of worship but also as a storage unit for all the city treasures. The iconic sculptures and the prodigious architecture refect some of the apogees of Greek Art.
Parthenon sits atop the Athenian Acropolis which is also the city center. So consequently, the temple offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the beautiful city of Athens.

Delos

Delos is one of the most important historical archaeological sites in Greece. Delos is basically an island near Mykonos and can be easily accessed by a 30-minute boat ride. Subsequently, Delos, as the historians say, used to be a holy sanctuary for almost 1000 years. However, the place is renowned as the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis – the Olympians from Greek mythology.
Various excavations are still carried out on the island, tracing the history back to the Olympians. In other words, they are the most extensive excavations in the Mediterranian. Many artifacts can be found displayed in the archeological museum of Athens and Delos.
Temple of Olympian Zeus
The Olympieion or the Temple of Zeus is the center of Athens and is dedicated to the head of Olympian Gods or Zeus. The construction of this temple started in the 6th century BC with a dream of building the greatest temple in ancient history. However, the construction was not complete until the 2nd century AD which is some 638 years after the work began. The temple housed some of the largest cult statues and over 104 colossal columns in the ancient world. Unfortunately, the temple was attacked by the barbarian invasion and was reduced to ruins.
Ancient Agora of Athens
Another historical monument on the Acropolis is the ancient Agora of Athens. To clarify Agora means a marketplace that makes it obvious. The place in ancient times was used for commercial gathering or assembly.
Agora is now a museum showcasing all the ancient Athenian culture. The monument is surrounded by a nice park where visitors can take a walk and relish the city view. Tickets are costly and beware of some tourist traps.
Mycenae
Mycenae is situated 120 km south of Athens and is specifically known for its archeological sites. It is known to be one of the major centers of ancient greek civilizations which can be traced back to the second millennium BC. Mycenae used to be a military hold which controlled all of southern Greece. It is said to be built by the Mykines cyclops.
In the vein, the archaeological site of Mycenae houses a small museum. Above all the site is a top-rated tourist spot in Greece. Walking in a place where civilization used to exist almost 3000 years is kind of a special feeling.
Kerameikos
Yet another territory on the Acropolis is marked by the archaeological site of Kerameikos. It is located on the northwestern end of the Acropolis. The Kerameikos is a huge area that lies on both sides of the ancient city walls.
On top of that, the great tombs along with the turtles walking around are a soothing experience. The small museum inside houses some beautifully carved ceramic pottery. The site is also a cemetery where numerous sculptures stand along the road to the city.
Monastery of Arkadi
The Monastery of Arkadi is located on the southeast of Crete island. The influential architecture shows the mixture of Roman and Baroque culture. The monastery used to be a place for art and science studies. To add up the school used to have a great library as well. Furthermore, the monastery is situated on a plateau and is well surrounded by thick walls that offer great protection.
The monastery of Akardi has a history hidden within itself. During the Ottoman rule somewhere around 950 Greeks, mostly women and children were hidden in this monastery. To clarify, the monastery acted as a home to the Greek refugees.
Paraportiani Orthodox Church
Panagia Paraportiani is an ancient Greek Orthodox church. Paraportiani is a beautiful white-washed church situated on the Greek island of Mykonos. The literal translation of the church is ‘Our Lady of the Side Gate’ since the church is an entrance to the Kastro area. The church was built in 1400 AD and is a combination of five churches altogether. To be precise, four of the churches are build adjacent to each other at ground level, while the main church is built on the top above the four churches.
Diktaion Andron
Diktaion Andron is basically a cave that is also a religious place of worship for some of the Greeks. Subsequently, the cave is known to be the birthplace of Zeus. This cave is located just above the modern village of Psychro and therefore is also identified as the Psychro cave. The cave is huge and is divided into two sections – the upper cave and the lower cave.
Archeologists, after some treacherous digging, have found an unusually sculpted temple inside the cave. On the other hand, locals mainly worship the stalagmites there.
Mount Olympus
Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in entire Greece and is a group of 52 peaks in total. Though the mountain is not a manmade structure but definitely holds great significance in Greek mythology. Just to clarify, the mountain is said to be the home of Greek gods and the twelve Olympians. Olympus is actually the name of the group of the twelve Olympian gods.
Furthermore, it is exceptionally biodiverse and is flourished with rich flora. It also houses a national park and is well renowned for its thrilling adventures like trekking.
Greece gives a great experience when it comes to history and archelogy. Even though I discussed a few there are numerous sights one can visit if you ever plan to visit Greece for a good amount of time. Other historical sites include Platamon Castle, Delphi, Olympia, Meteora, Fortress of Palamadi, numerous archeological sites and museums. Most importantly the place mentioned above can be accessed for a decent amount of money which also makes Greece pocket friendly.
If you ever wish to plan a trip to this historical country make sure you make the most out of it. Above all do not forget to take a break enjoying the beautiful city view from the Acropolis and dine in those luscious restaurants. This might add more charm to your journey.
