LUXEMBOURG
The Grand Dutchy
Did You Know?
- Luxembourg is the second-richest country in the world.
- Luxembourg gets its name from a Saxon fortress.
- There are 17km of underground tunnels cut out of the solid rock beneath Luxembourg City.
Luxembourg is a small country in western Europe with an area of almost 2500 sq. km. and is landlocked by all sides. Subsequently, it is surrounded by beautifully diverse neighbors like Belgium, Germany, and France. With these beautiful countries as neighbors, the culture and languages of the people are highly influenced by German and French cultures. Most importantly, this has led Luxembourg with three official languages, merely French, German, and the local Luxembourgish.
The country’s capital is Luxembourg City. One of the many things to say about Luxembourg is that it is one of the smallest countries in the world. But being small hasn’t stopped this country to lag down in regards to luxury and comfort. Luxembourg is one of the richest countries in the world. On top of that, the country has the highest luxury living cost and its subjects pay a huge amount as taxes than any other country.
The country is rewarded with the tastiest wine distilleries, ancient food, and a network of underground tunnels. Many don’t expect a lot of diversity from such a small country but as a matter of fact, it is one the most beautifully dressed country. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a land of beautiful historic monuments and loads of natural habitat. The history back was dark counting the number of battles and disputes between the emperors.
As of today, history can be depicted back from the awe-inspiring fairytale-like castles and fortresses which are an impressive reminder of those days. These sights are not only picturesque but also give chills about the history. Vianden Castle is the most renowned of all.
Luxembourg city, capital, is the most important city in the Duchy premises. Although most of the population lives in rural areas, the settlements here are small and tightly packed. This is what gives the colonial view of the city when captured from the river valleys. The city is encompassed with two rivers – Alzette and Pétrusse. The sumptuous view of the city that lies high on the cliffs, overlooking the deep valleys of the rivers is something you cannot forget about this place.
Since the country is piled up with the historical background, there are several parts that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sights. Some of them include the Town fortifications, Bock casemates, Neumünster Abbey, Grand Ducal Palace, and also the Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame. Apart from that, there are several World War II monuments and high-end museums that depict history in a systematic way.
Echternach Town Square is one of the oldest cities in the Duchy of Luxembourg. One of the most prominent religious structures, the basilica of the Abbey of Echternach is where the country’s patron St. Willibrord is buried. Müllerthal, better known as “Little Switzerland”, can be easily accessed from here since Echternach serves as a base to this place. You can hike and bike within the beautiful and dense forests with myriad streams and also some caves.
Traditional cuisines largely are pork-based with potatoes on the side, kinda similar to the German and the French cuisine. There is an unofficial national dish named Judd mat Gaardebounen, which basically means smoked neck of pork which is served with boiled broad beans. Many outdoor events that are hosted throughout the market serve some absolutely delicious food items. These make a great snack on cold winter days.
After World War II, Luxembourg cuisine did have some drastic changes. Like the food which typically used to be French got a hint mixture of Italian cuisine. Home cooking was greatly been influenced. Bamkuch is a tree cake that is mainly consumed during weddings and baptism ceremonies. I would highly recommend having a taste of it. Most importantly, the structure of the cake which is crafted to look like a tree trunk from inside is something to be admired.
Likewise, it is a little heavy on your pocket if you plan to visit Luxembourg because of all the taxes and heavy banking system. But you can always find someplace affordable to crash for a night. And I bet you, you’ll have the most scenic trip in entire Europe.
Happy Travel!
