A bad day on the snow is way better than a good day at work

Welcome to the Principality of Andorra! A country landlocked between France and Spain. With the most beautiful attire, Andorra is just like a peacock dressed up with all its colors. The country is vivid with mountains and plains. Now let us get down the slopes and learn more about Andorran ski resorts.

Number of Ski resorts in Andorra

Andorra is the sixth smallest nation in Europe. Although being this small the country is filled up with many villages that offer the best ski experiences.

Andorra houses 3 major ski resorts:

  • Grandvalira
  • Pal/Arinsal
  • Arcalis

Andorra lies among the eastern Pyrenees mountain range and thus has many hiking trails that tourists can enjoy in summers when the snow is thawed. But the same trails can serve as some great ski resorts in winter. Some of the ski resorts in Andorra offer slopes more than 200 km for professional skiing. On top of that, every ski resort offers heli-skiing. Isn’t that great?

Grandvalira Ski resort

Grandvalira is the largest ski resort in Andorra and one of the largest in the world. To clarify the slopes here are 210 km in total length completely accessible for skiing and snowboarding. Skiing down on the freshly powdered snow can be enjoyed all throughout the winters.

The Grandvalira ski resort was recently found in 2003. Actually, the single ski resort was not big enough. To sum up the large area the government took the initiative to merge some of the old and small ski resorts. Therefore ended up forming this enormous area for ski lovers.

Merger

The Pyrenees mountain has always been loved by the ski enthusiasts. In 1956 the government officially devised the Pas de la Casa & Grau Roig ski resorts. Both of these are small Andorran villages resting on the mountain range. Subsequently, some other small resorts and villages (villages namely Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo, Encamp) were added. The merger turned out successful making Grandvalira one of the greatest Ski resorts in entire Europe.

The 210 km slope is not actually a single stretch but a total length of the slopes on the  entire ski resort. The slopes are friendly which meet the situation of all types of skiers and snowboarders. There are 3 slopes for each type:

  • 100 km – Easy slope. Recommended for beginners.
  • 77 km – Intermediate slope. For professionals and regular skiers.
  • 33 km – Difficult slope. Steep slopes and dangerous route for highly skilled and professional skiers and snowboarders.

Pal/Arinsal Ski resort

Arinsal ski resorts are located near the capital city of Andorra la Vella. It is the second-largest ski resort in the Andorran mountain range. However, though being smaller in size the Arinsal ski resort lies on a higher altitude than that of Grandvalira. The resort is divided into two parts Pal and Arinsal which are connected with cable cars.

Similar to the Gradvalira ski resort Pal/Arinsal ski resort is also merged. This resort is a part of the Vallnord ski resort.

Arinsal ski resorts can be ideal for skiers due to many reasons. Firstly, the higher altitude meaning some great slopes and higher precipitation with fresh snow. Secondly, the low crowd subsequently results in vacant ski areas. Finally, the close to the capital city aking the place highly accessible and affordable.

There are some easy long slopes for beginners. On the other hand plenty of free slopes for advanced level skiers and snowboarders. The red slopes are steep yet very much aesthetic. Even intermediate-level skiers can ski down the red slopes taking in mind the safety precautions.
