Greenland, officially the territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, is the largest island in the world with the small population. Greenland is a house of 58,000 people mainly with the ethnicity – Inuit Danish and European. It lies in the Arctic circle and the Northern Atlantic Ocean and is well known for its immense glaciers and snow-covered regions.

Greenland is a bit tricky country to understand. It is officially owned and known as the Kingdom of Denmark, which is a European Nation. But Greenland is declared as a self-governing country and even has its own parliament. Even though Greenland is owned by Denmark, it lies in the Continent of North America. That’s confusing.

Lucky dip

Travel rookies prefer to travel to Iceland more than Greenland. And why shouldn’t they? Greenland is covered with a snow blanket all year round, meaning snowfall in summers too. Are you kidding me? Harsh winters, cold summers, it’s a bit to digest this kind of weather for a new traveler. Moreover, there is nothing much you can enjoy due to the extreme winters.

But this doesn’t mean that Greenland is a boring lame country. Greenland is full of glaciers, fjords, arctic wildlife, and cultural heritage. Greenland has one of the world’s largest national park. You can always enjoy spotting some of the native Greenlandic mammals like the polar bears, arctic fox, arctic hare, and reindeers.

The southern part of Greenland like on the island of Uunartoq is hot water springs formed naturally. Travelers should not miss this once in a lifetime experience. They can enjoy the view of the snow-capped mountains while sitting in the hot water pool. Many trails to hike on but are recommended if you can bear the cold weather.

Culture and Cuisine

The Culture of Greenland is a blend of Scandanavian and Inuit culture. Traditionally both cultures are unique in their own nature and have a remarkable impact on modern Greenland. The Inuit culture is famous for its strong artistic designs and sculptures. They are renowned for making the ‘spirit objects’ or voodoo items. Ivory items made from the sperm whale remains are valued here. Signing and rock music is the traditional part of the Greenlandic art culture.

Jumping onto the cuisines, Greenland has a strong culture of hunting their food. Meat from mammals like the arctic hare and birds provides heat to the body. Whereas, marine animals and fish play an important role in their diet. Suaasat, a traditional Greenlandic soup is a national dish. Highly recommended if you are adventurous with your food. It is extremely exotic and provides all the nutrients essential to survive this kind of snowy weather. The main ingredients are meat from whale, sea birds some beans, and stock.

The most consumed beverage is Greenlandic coffee. Similar to the Korean Dalgona coffee, Greenlandic coffee has a unique procedure and uses some surprising ingredients. Coffee, whiskey, Grand Marnier, and whipped cream are some of the ingredients used to make this kind of coffee. It is basically a “flaming” dessert coffee.

Finally, even though the tourism here is not on its peak, we sure want our fellow travelers to visit this place. To our knowledge, the governing bodies are working hard in building the infrastructure to attract more and more tourists every year. Enjoy the long trails, swim in the hot springs, catch some fish, and enjoy the food at this snowy retreat. Enjoy your journey one the largest island in the world. Enjoy Greenland!
