Luxor: The Lost Golden City Of Egypt Resurfaced By Archaeologists Recently!

It was around 3,400 years ago that Pharaoh Akhenaten built a city for himself and left his hometown. He abandoned everything… his name, his religion, and even his capital city Thebes(now Luxor). However, he lived a decent life in the city of his choice alongside his wife, Nefertiti. The reason for shifting the capital is considered to be Akhenaten’s devotion to the Sun God, Aten. Besides, he even changed his name from Amenhotep IV to Akhenaten(meaning devoted to Aten). Recently, a big revelation has been made about the capital Thebes or Luxor that Pharaoh Akhenaten had abandoned.

Luxor was the capital city of Egypt for around 150 years before Akhenaten left it for his reasons. However, there was no evidence of why he did so up until now. In the September of 2020, archaeologists made an unexpected discovery in Egypt. They have found the “Lost Golden City Of Luxor” with remains that date back to Akhenaten’s rule.  There are going to be a lot of speculations and controversies about this discovery.

Discovery Of Lost City Of Luxor:

Since the city was first discovered in the fourth quarter of 2020, archaeologists have only explored the surface of this wonderful site. Firstly, there is a lot that can be excavated here. Moreover, a lot of speculations are made around the importance of Luxor in Egyptology. Secondly, the structures, roads, and even the artifacts that are being excavated here are preserved to a much better extent. Thus, researchers are looking forward to finding more rustic things on this site.  Moreover, the experts are considering this city of Luxor to be an Egyptian version of Pompeii!

Furthermore, the city remains tell that it dates back to the 18th-dynasty. Around this time, Pharaoh Amenhotep III ruled Thebes(modern Luxor). Besides, he had accumulated a lot of wealth, and powers and was living a life of luxury. However, it surprises everyone that his son, Akhenaten left this pompous life and shifted to a very different location. Archaeologists are excited to see what kind of story the discovery of Luxor unfolds. Akhenaten ruled for 17 years from 1353-1336 but had scrap out every rule that his ancestors ever followed except one. As mentioned earlier, he devoted his life to the Sun God, Aten. So the pharaoh just followed the tradition of worshipping Aten.

Archaeological Excavation At Luxor Site:

The recent discoveries have provided some clues about everyday life during the rule of Amenhotep III. The researchers have found Amenhotep’s mortuary temple towards the north and Medinet Habu to the south of Luxor. Besides, there was a zigzag mudbrick wall, 9 ft high, around the rustic artifacts from Amenhotep III’s era. Most of them were related to the artistic and industrial production during his time. Moreover, archaeologists found a vessel filled with two gallons of boiled meat, and the year 37 was inscribed on it. Some other things like bricks and vessels have Amenhotep’s royal seal on them as well.

There have been more important items that the researchers have located in the vicinity of Luxor. However, they are still scratching off every surface in Luxor and excavating the ancient remains. The site seems really promising however, the artifacts and the city needs to be preserved and protected to a greater extent.
